ABOUT US
Move Better • Live Better
What is
THE MOVEMENT LAB?
TML is a space and philosophy which invites us to explore ourselves "outside the box" of conventional exercise-constructs, with a curious, integrative and playful mindset, building bridges and connections, through the art of movement.
Here at the Lab, we acknowledge our true human essence as multi-planar and multi-directional, with endless possibilities. And our bodies reflect this – simply observe the movement-potential of a healthy spine and the range of motion available at healthy hip and shoulder joints as examples. With this in mind, we draw inspiration from various disciplines, including:
- Calisthenics
- Combat Sports
- Yoga
- Dance
- Locomotion
- Soft Acrobatics
- Floorwork
- Communications
By combining such movement-disciplines and others, we have created our Mixed Movement Method. Through this method, we work towards a body and mind of better balance and alignment for quality and longevity of life.

What are the classes like ?
A typical class is built on a framework for actual Teaching and Practice time, encouraging curiosity, exploration and a FEELING for what our bodies may need for ourselves - with guidance. This way of approaching “training and exercise” supports awareness and empowers us to be in better control of our health, through a more mindful and balanced way of moving. Classes support improved quality of movement, and encourage awareness for when to “work-out” and when to “work-in”.
What is the
Mixed Movement Method?
Through our direct-experience and understanding of the human body as not solely restricted to linear and mechanical movement [ in the rigid sense ] – but rather as an intricately woven and complex interconnected system – we feel inclined [ for healthy maintenance ] and curious [ for playful and creative expression ] to explore ourselves through movement in more fluid and integrated ways.
Our approach at the Lab is one of navigation and learning through [a] isolated movement, [b] integrated movement and [c] improvised movement – exploring the space around us in multi-directional forms, with a variety of training and practice set-ups. We strive for self-development, and moving intelligently is key – exercising holistically for better flexibility, mobility, strength and freedom of movement – providing a life of balanced health, wellbeing and longevity.
Based on our 6 Primal Patterns – Push, Pull, Squat (and Lunge), Twist (and Rotate) Bend and Gait (Walking, Running, Sprinting), this method encourages conscious-movement [ which usually requires us to slow down and ‘listen’ to our bodies’, a challenge for most in this typically fast-paced world ] with circular and rotational patterns, as well as compressive, de-compressive and inverted positions – providing deeper and clearer feedback on the body’s current state. The feedback can often provide great indicators for where, how and at what tempo the body needs moving – typically beginning with spine and core integrity – after all, it is said we are as young or as old as our spine.
What should I expect ?
By drawing inspiration from a variety of disciplines, such as Yoga and Breath-work, Combat Sports, Animal Locomotion and Floor-Work, Dance, Soft Acrobatics, and Object Manipulation (such as sticks and lacrosse balls) we are able to create an encompassing experience for all to benefit, regardless of conditioning or level. And because such movement-practices support overall integrity within the body, it is found to compliment other areas of ‘specific movement interests’ (such as Crossfit, Weight-Training, Olympic Lifting, MMA, Football and many other sports).
